4 Steps To Clearing Mental Clutter

This post is adapted from the Little Lessons series, a free program shared through The Little Sage, to step you through one small change each week, preparing you for your best life.

Ever heard the saying: “What you think, you become”? Your thoughts, beliefs and intentions have a powerful way of creating your reality. Not only do they frame your perception of the world around you and therefore set the stage for the kinds of interactions and reactions you have in your life, but these thoughts, beliefs and intentions also send out a particular type of vibration or energy.

What exactly is the state of your mental energy or vibrations?

Holding negative or limiting thoughts, beliefs and intentions is equivalent to sending out negative energy into the world – and it will attract the same vibration in return. Holding more positive, loving and accepting thoughts, beliefs and intentions creates a far better vibration to send out (and receive).

By checking in on your thoughts, beliefs and intentions, and giving them a little shake up where needed, you can move into a space of co-creating with the Universe, living out your true self's desires and your true life path.

Bear in mind, your mental energy will also impact your physical body, as well as your emotional and spiritual body and vice versa – so it pays to work across all four 'bodies'.

Start clearing out old, outdated mental clutter with these four steps to help reframe your perspective and mental vibration.

Visualise your perfect world.

Take a journal, and find a blank double page spread. At the top of the left-hand page, write down: “If I lived in a perfect world, I would….” then list as many things as you can think of to complete this sentence. Answer from your heart, as opposed to your head. This means not getting sidetracked just yet with rational thoughts, such as how you could afford it, or what others might think. Just let your heart free-flow.

Identify limited thinking and beliefs – then smash through them.

Now, at the top of the right-hand page, write: “These are all the things that are expected of me...” and jot down as many as you can think of. Include expectations at home and work, but also bigger picture societal expectations and ‘rules’ too – like “I have to work hard” or “Boys aren’t supposed to cry”.

Recognise who really holds the power.

Answer this question: “Who or what is really stopping me from living in my perfect world?” Is it really that list of expectations you wrote earlier? Maybe another way of reconsidering these expectations is to simply ask “Why?”

Reframe your thinking in the positive.

Whether this is through positive affirmations, positive intention setting or working through old beliefs you held about yourself and/or others, all change will lead to change.

Remember, what you do on one level, will have an impact on other levels. That means, this mental clear out will impact your physical, emotional and spiritual bodies. Once you've removed limited thinking and started reframing your thinking in a more positive light, it might be time to visit a clear out on these other levels as well.
